Pragmatics and Semantics

A variety of contemporary pragmatics theories based on philosophy focus on semantics. Brandom for instance, focuses on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).

Others adopt a more holistic perspective on pragmatics, like relevance theory, which seeks to understand the processes involved in an utterance made by a hearer. However, this approach tends to overlook other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.

What is pragmatism, exactly?

Pragmatism is a philosophical perspective that offers a viable alternative to continental and analytic philosophy. It was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce and expanded by his colleague and friend William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It had a profound effect on the fields of inquiry from theology and philosophy to philosophy of science, but also on ethics, politics and philosophy of language. The pragmatic principle is at the heart of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This creates an epistemological view that is a form of 'inquiry-based epistemology' as well as an anti-Cartesian explanation of the norms that govern inquiry. Early pragmatists, however, generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a philosophy of science that focuses on a monism of truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).

Some pragmatists, such as Rorty, are inclined to be skeptical of any notion of knowledge based on'instantaneous' experiences. Others, like Peirce and James, are sceptical of the theory of correspondence as a source of truth which holds that true beliefs are those that reflect reality 'correctly'.

Pragmatism also examines the connection between reality, beliefs, and human rationality. It examines the importance of values and virtues, as well as the meaning and purpose of our lives. Pragmatists have also developed a wide range of theories and methods in fields like semiotics and philosophy of language, the philosophy of religion and philosophy of science, ethics and theology. Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third alternative to analytic and Continental philosophical traditions, and it has a variety of practical application. It is a growing field of inquiry.
